A Dog's Best Friend

O Lord, don't let me once forget
How I love my trusty pet-
Help me learn to disregard
canine craters in my yard
Show me how to be a buddy
even when my sofa is muddy,
Don't allow my pooch to munch
postal carriers for lunch,
Shield my neighbor's cat from view,
guide my steps around the doo,
Train me not to curse and scowl,
when it's puppy's night to howl,
Grant I shan't awake in fear
with a cold nose in my ear,
Give me patience without end-
Help me be "A DOG'S BEST FRIEND."

Open Swim Dates at Codorus
The "Open Swim Dates at Codorus" listed on our Calendar have been set up with the management of Codorus State Park to allow CNC members (and members of other regional NCA clubs) to train water work with their dogs. While these open swim dates are "official" CNC events, they are very informal and only loosely coordinated. If you are interested in participating, contact Dwight by email at to get on the email list of interested persons. It is only through that email list that you can find out who (if anyone) plans to train on a particular date, whether anyone will be bringing a boat, and so on.

The etiquette for these open swim dates is based on mutual cooperation and support. They are not events where you can just show up, get help working with your dog, and leave. It is important to remember that, especially when starting out, you can learn as much or more from helping other people train as you can from working with your own dogs. Members are expected to give at least as much as they receive: stewarding for each other, offering help and/or advice when asked, assisting with boats and other equipment, and pitching in as much as they can to make the experience pleasant and rewarding for everyone involved.
CNC has pre-arranged for the use the Codorus site for Open Swim Dates, but all other details of the days are up to the participants. No formal instruction is scheduled and no equipment will be supplied by CNC.

Please contact others who may be training to confirm the date and times for those who may be training.

There are some rumblings that the park (CODORUS) is unhappy with people who are training at the park on days not prearranged by CNC.

Please pass the word; we could lose our training and testing site if we do not respect park rules

You are not allowed to train except on CNC scheduled dates

It took CNC many years to develop the good relationship we now have with Cordorus
We don't want to lose this site

You must be an active CNC or NPD Member to participate
Each training session must have an active CNC member on site

Non-Member Participation in CNC Events
Non-members are invited to our Spring and Fall Fun Days as a way to get to know members of the club before joining. Non-members are also welcome to attend any of our events as spectators, respecting the boundaries of the event and staying well back from them especially if they are accompanied by their dogs. Unfortunately, the cost and terms of our insurance have caused us to limit participation in events other than the Fun Days to members of CNC or other NCA regional clubs.

If you are not a member of CNC or another NCA regional club and you want to participate in club activities other than the Fun Days, please contact Paula McPherson to get a membership application form or to ask questions about membership in our club. We hope you'll join!
CNC Safety Policy
The Board of Directors has established the following safety policy for all club activities. The following criteria must be met:
  • The dog must be crated or on leash at all times.

  • When on leash, the length of the leash must not exceed six feet and may not be a retractable leash.

  • When on leash, dogs must be under control at all times.

  • Dogs showing uncontrolled or aggressive behavior may be asked by the event chair, a board member, or other official to leave the site promptly or be crated for the duration of the event.

  • Current rabies certificate required.

Failure to meet these conditions may result in a disciplinary hearing.

*There will be occasions when the dog will be allowed off lead when approved by the event chairperson*
